The Mauermuseum, or the Checkpoint Charlie Museum as it’s known to visitors, was founded in 1962 at the Checkpoint Charlie border crossing, a geographic focal point during the Cold War.
Exhibitions at the museum detail the history of the Berlin Wall and incidents surrounding it including dramatic stories of escape attempts some by hot air balloon, chairlifts and even a small submarine. All exhibits are in English, German, French and Russian.
Checkpoint Charlie border crossing is a well-known landmark of Berlin and is popular with those looking for a postcard photograph opportunity. But visitors should not miss the insightful Mauermuseum too.
Entrance is free for Berlin Pass holders - a saving of over 12.50 EUR.
